Valentine's Day
If my homeroom students would like to bring Valentine's and individual candies for tomorrow that is fine. We will have a popcorn snack and free slushy in the afternoon. Looking forward to seeing you. Hope you enjoyed your days off.

Thinking strategies
This week the students participated in a thinking strategy. They were asked to take some words that deal with thinking and categorize deep thinking versus knowledge. At the end of the lesson they were able to understand that sometimes you have to think a little deeper in order to fully understand a concept. I am proud of all of them. They all are well on there way to being deep thinkers that will enable them to tackle anything. Way to go guys!!!!

What I learned today
We are a learning environment. Everyday students are learning. Everyday I am learning from my wonderful students. I have learned today that each child is different. I learned that each child expresses themselves differently while learning. Thank you wonderful students for teaching me more ways to learn.

Reading Strategies
What Do Good Readers Do?
What Can You Do to Become a Better Reader?
(Based on information in Expanding Expectations: Reading)
Before Reading
Set a Purpose for Reading
Think if you will you be reading to find out what happens in a story or to learn specific information.
Preview the Text
Look at the title, pictures, captions under pictures, headings, bold-faced print and other graphics.
Activate Background Knowledge
Think about what you already know about the content of what you will read.
Predict
Think what might happen in the story, what words may be used, or what information the text might
contain.
During Reading
Cross-check
Check one cue with another. Ask yourself, "Does this word look right, sound right, and make
sense?"
Reread
When problems occur, return to the beginning of a sentence or paragraph and read it again.
Predict and Confirm
Ask yourself, "What word do I expect to see?", "What do I think will happen next?", "Did that make sense?"
